ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has reported 485 new Coronavirus (Covid-19) infections on Friday, taking the national confirmed cases tally to over 268, 500.
A total of 5, 095 medical tests have been conducted to identify the new positive cases on the day, according to the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 report for Friday.
The report also confirmed the death of 12 people due to health complications related to the virus, pushing the number of Covid-19 deaths in Ethiopia to 4, 060.
Data from the ministry shows severe cases has continued to fall for 10 subsequent days across the nation.
About 512 seriously ill patients are currently getting treatment in Covid-19 medical centers, Friday’s report claims. These patients are among the 38, 978 confirmed active cases in the country.
During the same period, health officials say 1, 487 patients have recuperated from the deadly respiratory disease, bringing the recovery tally to 225, 480.
Ethiopia confirmed its first coronavirus infection on March 13, last year. Since then, the country conducted nearly 2.68mln medical tests to identify a total of 268, 520 cases.
The tally puts the country among the hardest hit by Covid-19 in Africa, forcing the government to take measures including launching a vaccination campaign to stop the pandemic.
On Friday, the country administered close to 50, 000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines, taking the total number of vaccinated people to 1, 584, 156.
The East African nation began the vaccination campaign after it received 2.2 million vaccines from the COVAX Facility, the global initiative for equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines.
