Police Seize Contraband Goods, Currencies worth 720mln Birr

ADDIS ABABA – Ministry of Revenue said customs police have seized over 720.8 million birr worth contraband items and currencies within the first quarter of the current 2020/21 fiscal year.

The estimation involves more than 152mln birr worth contraband items and currencies which were being smuggled out of the country.

The ministry, in a statement issued earlier today, said at least 270 people are in police custody in connection with the illicit acts which, authorities say, is affecting the socioeconomic development of a country.

Cars, clothes, food and drink items were the top three items, respectively, that security officials captured while they were smuggled into the country.

Majority of these goods were captured while coming into the country via Hawassa, Dire Dawa and Awash routes.

Authorities also put drugs as a top item in the list of goods illegally exported from the country. This followed by minerals and foreign currencies, respectively.

The ministry said the majority of these contraband items were captured at its checkpoints located in Addis Ababa bole international airport, Hawassa and Moyale cities.
