ADDIS ABEBA – Ethiopia on Monday announced that it will be locally assembling electric cars from the major car manufacturer, Hyundai.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed becomes the owner of the first electric car fully assembled by a Hyundai dealership, Marathon Motors – a comapny owned by Ethiopian long-distance athlete Haile Gebreselassie.
The PM said that such investments “support the country’s climate resilience and greening ambitions”.
The decision to assemble electric cars in Ethiopia follows the request put forth by the Prime Minister to the Hyundai President, according to the PM office.
“Unique to Ethiopia, the electric car does not require charging at terminals and can rather be charged anywhere,” the office said.
Marathon Motors was reported to have invested half a billion birr on the assembly plant. The assembly plant has the capacity to assemble 10,000 cars per year.
