ADDIS ABABA – Members of the Ethiopian parliament have approved a supplementary 48.6 billion Br budget on Friday.
This is the second time that the lawmakers have to sanction an additional budget in 2020 after they approved of 27.89 bln birr in April.
Officials said the additional budget was needed due to unforeseen public expenditure requirements and declining revenues with the country losing billions of Birr in revenues from COVID-19 fallout.
About 38 billion Birr of the newly approved budget will be used to pay for food support to 30mln people that are in need of humanitarian support.
The remaining will be directed to procure medical equipment that supports against COVID-19 which has affected more than 831 Ethiopians to date.
Of the total, 28.3 billion birr will be raised from external and 20 billion birr from local sources, Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance, said.
