ADDIS ABABA – Artist Haacaluu Hundeessaa, Prominent Oromo singer and songwriter, was shot to death in Addis Ababa late last night.
The artist was shot near Gelan Condominiums, reported state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate.
He was admitted to Tirunesh Beijing General Hospital but died of his injuries shortly after.
The news brought shock among many.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed condolences to all who are grieving the loss of the “precious soul”. Abiy said, “we’re mourning the loss of the incredible and shining young artist”.
In a twitter post, Editor in chief of Addis Standard magazine Tsedale Lemma said “Last night we didn’t only lose Haacaaluu Hundeessaa, a husband, a father of 3, a son, & a brother”
“We lost the Oromo nation’s institution of conscience; a star, who, through his music, was the melodic company of the struggles, dreams & hopes we continued to live through,” she added.
Mohammed Ademo also said “Words betray me!” to describe a legend cut short.
Haacaluu recognized his defiance, bold lyrics and courageous efforts to amplify the collective yearning for change in Ethiopia, he said, adding that “We’ll never be forgotten”.
The Addis Ababa Police Commissioner said that several people have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
