Workneh Takes Over IGAD’s Executive Secretary Position

ADDIS ABEBA – Former foreign minister of Ethiopia Workneh Gebeyehu has assumed Executive Secretary position of IGAD, east African regional bloc, on Thursday.  

“Dr Workneh Gebeyehu takes over position of IGAD Executive Secretary from Amb Mahboub by signing Certificate of Handing Over in the presence of Ambassador of Ethiopia,” said Mahamed A. Abdillahi, spokesperson of the bloc, on a twitter post.

Workneh (PhD) replaced Kenyan diplomat Mahboub Maalim who has been serving as head of the regional bloc since 14 June 2008. He was appointed at the 12th Summit of IGAD Heads of State and Government that was held on in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Workneh served as Foreign minister of Ethiopia between 2016 to 2018 and is a member of the Addis Ababa City Council (since 2012).

Previously, he served as Minister of Transport of Ethiopia (2013-2016) and Member of Ethiopian House of People’s Representative Parliament (2005-2012).

At a region level, he served in different positions at regional and federal levels of the government of Ethiopia, notably, Commissioner General of the Ethiopian Police (2001-2012), Head of Administration Affairs Bureau and Cabinet member of Oromiya Regional State (1999-2000).

Workneh holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) in Political Science and International Relations, Addis Ababa University, and PHD in police science from Criminal Justice and Police Science Department of the University of South Africa (March 2016).
